What I Can’t Do for You as Your Business Coach

I can do a lot for your as your business coach.  I’ve been doing this for over a decade now so I have a few things figured out.

However, there is at least one thing that I can’t do for my clients at all…

I can’t make being an entrepreneur easy.

Owning your own business is simply going to be hard, and it’s likely going to disappoint, stress, and scare the crap out of you.

Here’s how it shows up–if you’re scared of being seen and judged or ridiculed by the world, then you’ll sabotage my efforts to grow your biz into something bigger.

You’ll only feel safe with a biz that doesn’t work, so you’ll champion bad design, poor language and brand choices and ineffective biz strategy until your subconscious is telling you that no one will hire you and you’ll stay safely small.

Clear, effective marketing and sales just won’t ‘feel right’ to you.  The clear messaging and calls to action will scare you (because they’ll hold you frankly accountable) and you’ll do anything you can to backpedal out of your desire to live a bigger, grander life through your work.

And if you’re one of my clients, it’s even worse for you because the thing you’re showing to the entire world is your heart.

Getting bigger feels threatening.

But here’s what you need to get ready for … it’s not going away.

You’re not going to have to get used to a new business, you’re going to have to get used to an entirely new way of being.

From this point forward, you’re going to have to become the person who now writes books, or speaks elegantly to large groups, or who sees lots of clients, or (insert your dream for your greater self here).

You’re going to have to be that person every time you hand out a business card, see a client, declare your pricing, or even brush your teeth.

This is going to affect everything, which means it’s going to be scary.

And I’m not going to help you.

Not even a little bit.  I wish I could.  I really do.  If I could make it easier on you, I’d give you assurances that it’s all going to be okay and I’d make all your decisions for you.

But, that’s not actually going to help.

You’re going to need to face your own dragons.  You’re going to need to examine how your father talked with you about your career and what your mother ingrained in you about rich people.  You’re going to have to examine how well you can talk with your partner about risks and finances and you’re going to have to stare down the feeling of being naked in the school cafeteria.  You’re going to have to look at a lot of deep shit.

And you’re going to have to do it alone.

I’ll do what I can.  I’ll bring pom-poms and hot tea and I’ll give you everything I’ve got, but at the end of the day, I’m going to be the one asking you the really hard questions:

What do you WANT?

What do you dream of doing?  

Who do you dream of serving and how?  

What are you COMMITTED to?  

And if you want to succeed, you’re going to have to answer those yourself, without anyone else’s help.

My biggest wish for you, my dream, is that you create the business of your dreams.  I want it to look however YOU want it to look.  I want it to be wonderful and weird and audacious.  I want you to succeed beyond your wildest dreams and have work that fulfills and sustains you.

So, how do you get there if you’re all alone and there’s no one to help you make decisions or make it easier?

Focus on your passion.

Your love for what you do and the clients you serve will sustain you through this process.  It will help you get clear about what you want and how you most want to show up in the world.

If you can look inward and listen to what you love instead of what you fear, you’ll be able to articulate what you want for your biz and website.  You’ll make choices that resonate for you and your vision.

It won’t be any less terrifying, but your passion for your work and your Right People will guide you.

This is why the first step of my Get Clear process is the question, “What do you most love about what you do?”

Your answer is critical for your success because it stops you from focusing on external validation and shifts your focus to internal validation.  It promotes strength and confidence.  You become unshakeable in your message and vision.

From that place, marketing strategies and sales formulas are easy.  You instinctively know what’s best for you and your biz.  You begin to live and grow in a state of service and abundance, and your work becomes a real joy.

So what kind of business coach would I be if I took all that away from you by taking the scary out?  I wouldn’t dream of it.  That, as far as I can tell, is part of the joy of this journey.
